Why would you read a book over playing a video game or watching a movie?

So there was this poem I read a long time ago, or it might have been a piece of flash fiction, but basically, it was set during the aftermath of the Iran/Iraq war. A young woman's father had been taken as a POW of the other side and was being released like 10 years later. In the interim, the daughter and the mans wife had not communicated with him at all, and the wife wound up dying. When he is released, the daughter goes to pick him up and it's been so long since the father had seen his family, he gives his daughter a big romantic kiss on the lips, embarassingly, mistaking her for his wife. I've been searching for hours. It's driving me crazy. Anybody know what i'm talking about?

Infinite Jest is funny, but so is a book reviled here: Forest Gump. There is a scene with Forest, an orangutan, and a lesbian in a spaceship that still makes me laugh thinking about it.

I don't know how to put this precisely, but hear me out: Books are built out of books, in the sense that, newer works of fiction take themes from, and allude to older works of fiction. Moby Dick, as an example, alludes to the works of Shakespeare and The Bible, among several other things. Tolkien's works allude to ancient Norse mythology, the tale of Beowulf, etc.

Now, if someone wanted to write a work of fiction that alludes to older works from their country's history, what works would they draw from?

For example, if I was writing a novel in the modern day, and I wanted to incorporate themes and allusions to other works from American history into it, what works of American fiction would I allude to? Would I allude to Moby Dick the same way that Mellvile alluded to Shakespeare's King Lear? Would I allude to Blood Meridian the same way that McCarthy alluded to Paradise Lost? America is such a young country that it doesn't have old works of literature to build upon like England does; so in this case, would I just build on older American works instead?
