> Also, does memorizing poems make one look like a pretentious douche?

The way I see it is, if you memorize it because you feel you adore it so much you want to carry it with you for yourself everywhere, then it's fine.

It's like - you shouldn't remember poetry just to recite it to others, you should remember it for your own pleasure.

Reposting my response poetry of John Donne's Holy Sonnet X from the perspective of Death himself - still looking for feedback, as I'm giving it up for a contest.

Fear superior ends by pride,
The might of your man, an ultimate curse.
As holy as He, yet no mercy;
To allow rest is sanctuary,
For heaves that follow, in deep tombs etched,
Sin rots, along with the body.
Willing souls burn in Hell's cauterized flames,
Slaves to fate, chance, kings, and wretched despair,
Lone suffer of earthly poison, men of war, rampant plague.
Lease of my cold grip; lands, beyond Eden, with charms so lush,
To make everlasting in proud rest, tainted within chains that bind,
Am I so proud an abomination, man?
Graceful fake redemption as unclean souls lock away.
And say death truly undying; Death, thou shalt be immortal.

I'm never afraid to read my writing. Even if it sucks completely on your own accord, you've learned what to avoid next time.

And there's usually salvageable material in night-time writing for later work.

Would "Seven" be okay?

Seven was good!

It's a real peeve of mine to use words repeatedly as I'm writing so occasionally, in my attempt to deviate from this, I do tend to like...really try and write out a new phrase. It can be good, it is usually bad however.

Thank you for the specific examples - I think I just need to read more often to broaden my vocabulary and see how prose generally moves along.

> mfw that part

It was weird to read that part with Verne writing it because it seemed so cordial - but, deep down, yeah you knew it was freaking out the hell out. You just instinctively "i know that feel."
