Stoner is a short and easy book about slightly more serious themes than YA fiction. I've heard it maligned as "literature for people who don't read", and I think that's why it's a great beginner /lit/ pick.

Unironically.

I’m almost done with the book, I bought it because I see it near the top of /lit/‘s top 100 list every year.

I’m really enjoying it and find it hard to put down, but why does this board like it so much compared to other places? I looked around at a few other top 100/250/500 lists and didn’t see this one in really any of them. I don’t think you’re meming me, I think it’s very captivating, but I don’t really get why it’s so popular here. Can anyone explain? Did you like the book? Is it under/overrated?

I just finished reading Stoner, and I loved it. Overall it left me pretty sad, and partially optimistic. Stoner is the first novel that I've read so far that had the ability to in a way really capture life from the experiences of a person. The story is so personal that left me feeling as if I had lived the life of Stoner himself. What do you guys think about this great work of literature? What are some other books that will give me the same experience as reading Stoner?

Just finished it. It'd been a long time since a book made me cry.
The way Williams so beautifully captures the life of a man who lived in such an average, yet tragic way, all for the few things that he loved, is breathtaking. It really reminds you how heroic the everyday man is, as small as he may be. I don't even know what else to say really.
This thread will probably not get a ton of attention, but I just had to share with someone how damn beautiful a book can actually be. Not because it's witty or clever, or even because it showcases the brilliance of its author (though it does all of that and more.) Great art like this is great simply because it touches the soul with its honesty. I think sometimes we lose sight of that here on /lit/

If you haven't read Stoner, READ IT. It is by far the best work this board has yet convinced me to read.

Just finished this and holy shit is it good. Is there anything similar you guys could recommend in terms of themes like coming to accept one's "failure" with a sort of indifference? Or maybe that's not even a point of it. That's just what I took away from his death.

Anyway, recs, discussion, please and thank you!

New to /lit/ and just finished pic related

I can't wrap my head around what motivates Edith to behave so caustically towards Stoner.

Can /lit/ offer any insight?

How difficult is pic related. I have a fairly intermediate reading level. Recently read Hard Times and Good Old Neon, to give an idea.
