About to dive into this book. Any good?

The reviews for Blood Meridian seem to vary wildly. Is the prose really that hard to take? I don't care if it is gruesome, I am just worried about the writing as I'm considering reading this next.

What was your experience with Blood Meridian?

What are some good western novels like Blood Meridian?

He dances in the light and in shadow and he is a great favourite. He never sleeps, the judge. He is dancing dancing. He says that he will never die.

So I've never really don't much reading outside of the extremely mainstream stuff. Long story short I read Blood Meridian just recently and was completely blown away by how beautiful and brutal it was. I looked up reviews and people seem to say it is one of if not the best western ever written.

Of course BM can't be the only great western novel. What should I look to read next? Are there any writers that have a similar style to McCarthy?

Also BM discussion? I've never read a book where every sentence is so weighted and essential. For lack of a better word it is truly epic, Judge Holden might just be my favourite antagonist in any work ever.

And I absolutely plain did not like The Road.

I didn't get this, /lit/. So spare me all the 2ddep4u stuff and explain the theme behind this book, because all I got was "the West was rough. Violence is bad. People are shit."
tl;dr: convince me to believe that this isn't shock-value shit.
