Allow me to propose an alternate way of perceiving the priest/monk garb in western society. It makes you stand out, but not necessarily in a positive way. To most people it is going to make you look rather ridiculous. So I think there is an element of allowing yourself to be humiliated and be viewed as a fool for Christ's sake. I don't equate it to the full "fool for Christ" archetype, but I think there is something going on in that is similar.

Given that he actually gave up his worldly life and relegated himself to a cell in the woods, I fail to see how he is a "hipster". Perhaps a quantity of his readers have been, but I don't think there is anything about his conversion that is inauthentic like you are implying.
