Whenever people bring up 1984 it always seem to be due to the surveillance aspect. While that is a very important topic today, why does it seem that the far more effective methods of subjugation that are talked about in the book never seem to get brought up? I specifically mean the pacifying of the proles through cheap, brainless entertainment and pornography, two things that are so widespread today that you'd be hard-pressed to avoid it.
