Based on what I've heard from people here. This book seems like the real life necronomicon and will actually make you depressed, anxious and nihilistic forever. Is this true? Is there anything I would gain from reading this? I am already very much anxious of death and I don't like really like being reminded of it.

Just finished this, and my main takeaway is that while theists have to cope with there not being an afterlife, atheists have to cope with religion being the driving force of human progress and civilization. Ernest Becker makes an excellent case as to how our modern advanced civilizations came about as rejection to the concept of death and becoming nothingness, but I see no reason why I shouldn’t be able to contribute to civilization even if it is all ultimately just a way to cope for our eventual deaths. Even if something is a lie, if it has the power to change the world, then it must contain some kind of truth. Isn’t humanity proof of that? In this world made from a supposedly false premise, our ancestors and the rest of humanity nevertheless overcame very real struggles. Despite those struggles, the quality of human life changed and the world at large was changed for the better. So it doesn’t really matter where exactly the truth ends and where the lies start, because if lies can change the world just as well as the truth can, then lies are just another way of telling the truth. Some lies are capable of changing the world for the better, and some truths can lead the world to becoming worse, so I don’t think anyone can really say without a doubt which is more right than the other when everything is said and done. What do you guys think?
