Not the anon you're responding to, but I own the unabridged set. It's tough to recommend. I have not read the unabridged version but I'm told it has annotations explaining the references you would get from the unabridged set. I'm sure you won't get all the complexities you would from the full set, but if you give up 300 pages in you don't get to the good stuff anyways.

You're welcome to try your hand at the big boy copy, but be warned, the combined volumes come out to 900 pages and the entire first volume is about nothing but baroque architecture and numbers.
