Has anyone here ever read Borges' literary criticism? I've read a bit of what he wrote about Nathaniel Hawthorne. He seems to be a really sharp critic.

Maybe he should lose some fucking weight so he can live longer. Borges became famous in his 60s, but he lived to be nearly 90 so he got to enjoy it for a quarter-century. GRRM should take better care of himself.

Almost anything by Borges. Just pick a story at random, none of them are longer than twenty pages.

Only the lucky and the great ever have CAREERS as writers. The lucky are the ones who write something that hits on the cultural zeitgeist, which causes their work to sell like hotcakes. J.K. Rowling is the ur-example of this. The great are those who are truly transcendent, magnificent writers, and while some of them never achieve any fame or note in their lifetimes, a decent amount of them do sooner or later. Borges is a good example of this. It took him 30 years to achieve worldwide fame, but he did get there, and he lived pretty sweetly once he did.

il/lit/erates,

I'm looking for some works written in Spanish that are accessible for someone with intermediate skill in the language. Basically, anything I can use to improve my Spanish language skills while still enjoying a work of some literary merit. Poetry, fairy tales, anything works.

Assuming every reader approaches a text with a horizon of expectations* is every book necessarily written by Pierre Menard?

*a pre-conditioned attitude towards the text/reading the text furnished by ones socio-economic and spatio-temporal conditions (i.e. what kind of people your parents were, what sort of education you've had, what other texts you've read etc.)

Has anyone ever been on a literary pilgrimage? Has anyone ever gone somewhere particularly linked to an author they love?

For example, I've always wanted to visit the national library in Buenos Aires, because it was so important to Borges. Something like that. Has anyone ever been to their favorite writer's special place, or to their favorite writer's grave?
