>background characters all seem to have some kind of past that's never fully explained
>story hints at other goings-on beneath the surface which the narrative is related to but the protagonist will never be fully aware of
Any /sffg/ books with this feel?

What was the intention behind the ending of this series?

Perhaps the book was more detailed, but them taking in Kit's child seemed to perpetuate this cycle, but it didn't really seem to fit the idea of the arc. What was the 'moral' behind taking this new child in and deciding to raise her?

I love the themes explored in the show (and I imagine the books as well) but I feel like the ending, while nice, doesn't seem to highlight a specific point. it just seems like something tacked on.

am I wrong? Am I just barely not connecting the dots?

I really loved this show but felt that the penultimate peril served as a better finale thematically. Ending it with the reminder that NO ONE can protect them and going off into the unkown with their troubles was powerful. Adding the stuff from 'the end' seemed unnecessary other than the stuff we learned about the parents and olaf.
