I have to admit, I am a sucker for opening lines.
ITT: post your favorite "first line".
I'll start:

"The thousand injuries of Fourtunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge."

I don't know why, but something about that line gives me shivers.
