It's worth reading earlier version because the closer you go to the actual event in his life the more he talks about the positives of the camaraderie, hierarchy, and nationalism of it all. As he gets older he edits more and more of that out, especially once you hit the pre/post-ww2 break where anything pro-German is prohibited. It's all based on his diaries so it's interesting that he's more truthful to he's less and less truthful to the actual experience as he gets older. If you want the most authentic primary source perspective, you should be reading the earliest version possible.
