When I used to consider myself a Christian I was on edge most of the time and more defensive about my beliefs than proactive (I really just wanted to be comfortable with my beliefs, and wanted to believe that other people were just simple-minded and stupid, or not looking at the question fairly)--however, eventually, I found atheistic criticisms to be quite devastating (not of the Richard Dawkins, new atheist variety, but of a more serious philosophical variety).

I never intuited God or anything else...it's very easy for me to look back upon my past and notice the cognitive bias of my 'spiritual experiences' which were really more or less just states of awe (goosebumps, momentary happiness).

With that said, I really do dislike religion, but I don't dislike it in the manner that most teenagers do; I'm not particularly rebellious (rebellion for its own sake is something that I've regarded as quite childish for some time now), and my parents don't really seem too bothered, either (probably because I have a civil approach). I dislike religion (at least the specific sect of fundamentalist Christianity that I used to believe in, which was quite extreme) because sometimes it prevents believers from seeing things that are true (natural selection), and on occasion it's used as a justification to commit acts that are fundamentally unethical (circumcision, 'ex-gay' rehabilitation, etc.).

There are the highly-suggested books, those where everyone will say "It's a literary classic!" or some such.

What are they?

I know of 1984, Dorian Gray, Catcher in the Rye, and that's pretty much it. Right now I'm reading The Divine Comedy.

What, if any, music do you use when you're writing?

I need to get my creative juices flowing while I write some poetry. Any suggestions?

So I'm going to be writing a short story soon. I need a good introduction.

I'm going to be explaining the background of the relationship between the two main characters, and need a creative way to begin.

Should I start with the guy saying "I've joined the military" then flashback to the beginnings of their relationship, or start some other way? I need to work in that he joined the military somehow.

The genre ghetto is one of the worst thing that ever happend to fiction. It exists only to give Barnes and Nobles a way to divide their shelves. It creates an arbitrary division that allows people to camp on one side of the gap and throw stones at the other.

Where is Anthony Burgess's Clockwork Orange? Literature. Where is Gibson's Pattern Recognition? Sci-fi. Where is Atwood's Oryx and Crake? Literature. Chabon's Yiddish Policeman's Union? Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell? No fucking rhyme or reason, it's only based on which side the author's axe first fell.

On top of this ridiculous split, escapist idiots who make a point of ONLY reading "Genre" create a demand from publishers to print absolute dreck, because people will buy it. This is more prevalent in the Genre sections, but the Literature shelves are full of shit as well, but you Lit snobs are too busy casting stones across the wall to turn around behind you.

So in short, fuck you all. Read books you like.

The moment you tell someone else they are an idiot for liking something is the moment your opinion means fuck all to anyone.

I guess science is really nothing more than an outlook on life too, when you think about it (it is 'natural philosophy' after all).
