every porno bit in Atomised and the Possibilty of an Island was there to create contrast (Bruno/Michel, Daniel1/Daniel25)
And they were purposefully grotesque, corresponding with the view of sexuality (be it for reproduction or for hedonistic pleasure) as evil (though there are brief, intentionally pathetic scenes of tender sex)

That being said, I like his later stuff better, specially The Map and the Territory. Even so, Submission might be his best writting yet, more subtle in his own way. Haven't read Serotonin yet.

I read them mostly in order with good results. I think My favorites are Whatever and The Map and the Territory.

Also, I've read all of Houellebecq's novels and he is probably my favorite contemporary author, though I don't favor all the racy stuff.

Anon, there is nothing left to salvage. The nihilism wrought by the enlightenment and the scientific and sexual revolutions were the greatest test a civilization could face and the west failed egregiously. None of us are even a people anymore, just a nebulous collection of niche markets and labor forces.

There is nothing left.
