The harsh truth that makes Indians cope like no other is that most of them (at least the stereotipical Tamil looking pajeets) have very little to do with the sages that wrote the Vedas.
Modern Indians are the product of admixture with a predominately Dravidian ancestry.
Caste system was a way for the Aryan conquerers to subdue the native Dravidians. In the Gita it's literally said at the beginning that the mixing of the castes (ie races) brings ruin. That's why India couldn't build on their glorious past, the Aryans didn't listen to their sages and let the tamas of Dravidians flow into their souls, giving as a result the modern Indians, a literal degeneration (from Latin degeneratus, de - genus, stray away from your ancestors).
