Books about why when life is easy I am unmotivated but when life is hard my motivation skyrockets?

Is it possible to get a decent job that is /lit/ or /his/ without a degree? I dropped out of college because I seriously cant afford putting myself in debt but after trying other things like programming and still dropping it because its not what I want I might consider going back to at least get an associates because any decent job requires a degree unless I want to subject myself to the torture of freelancing.

How do you accomplish that feeling of terror or fear from a book?
I am interested in the horror genre and i have read some of the classics, but i haven't reached that "spooky" feeling people got back then neither i feel what i write really unsettles the reader.
