>"In 1934, Robert was twenty-eight, did not have a conventional job, and still lived at home. At the time, Novalyne did not fully grasp the dynamic between Robert’s writing and Mrs. Howard’s work as his gatekeeper. It was odd, however, that Mrs. Howard never gave Robert the option of returning Novalyne’s calls, since she never relayed Novalyne’s messages. To some people in Cross Plains, Robert’s writing work was altogether unusual. Th e town loved and admired Dr. Howard and his services, but, as Robert was aware, they blathered among themselves about his son."

>"One of the ladies, Jimmie Lou, matter-of-factly stated that Robert was a freak. The other ladies agreed and chimed in, saying they had heard he was crazy. Th is was standard small-town gossip. At this, Novalyne became irritated and began defending Robert, explaining that she had already met him and thought he was nice. She then declared that she wanted to get better acquainted with him. Th e ladies offered her blank stares. Mrs. Smith shrugged her shoulders and told Novalyne that Robert was not very friendly; she only ever saw him talk to Dave Lee and Lindsey Tyson. Novalyne soon found out that these reactions to Robert were standard fare among most people in Cross Plains"
