They are both generally societal critiques. They also highlight the consequences for society of materialist modes of thinking, but in different ways (ironic for Debord being that he was a Marxist). Guenon's critique IMO is much more wide-ranging although they agree on a number of points. I would say Debord's is in a way subsumed within Guenon's. Debord specifically examines the negative consequences of the 'Spectacle' (the abstracted but in a way participatory circus generated by the consumer-culture/new media/entertainment complex) for social relations, for thought, on quality of life etc. Guenon more examines the reasons for these sorts of things and the higher principles involved. In Guenon's view with society no longer being guided by the proper principles it's only natural that society should degenerate into a spiritually and metaphysically empty 'spectacle' where most people are preoccupied with possessing things and demonstrating their possessions to others. I'm a fan of both authors and I'm surprised I havn't seen people post about the connection before, there are a lot of similarities.
