Greeks loved their milk:

Plato's Republic:
> @ 460d "These officials will also look after the rearing - they'll take their mothers to the pen when their breasts are full of milk all the time using any device available to prevent them recognising their own offspring; if the mothers don't have enough, it'll be the job of the officials to provide others with milk for the infants."

Aristotle's History of Animals, Book III:
> @ 13 "As a general rule, milk is not found in the male of man or of any other animal, though from time to time it has been found in a male; for instance, once in Lemnos a he-goat was milked by its dugs (for it has, by the way, two dugs close to the penis), and was milked to such effect that cheese was made of the produce, and the same phenomenon was repeated in a male of its own begetting. Such occurrences, however, are regarded as supernatural and fraught with omen as to futurity, and in point of fact when the Lemnian owner of the animal inquired of the oracle, the god informed him that the portent foreshadowed the acquisition of a fortune. With some men, after puberty, milk can be produced by squeezing the breasts; cases have been known where on their being subjected to a prolonged milking process a considerable quantity of milk has been educed.

Any other ancient Greek /d/ content?

Is it possible to refute the underlying bedrock of the western philosophical canon and if so, how would one go about doing it succinctly? By underlying bedrock I mean more or less the ancient Greek's works on the basic concepts of spirituality, ethics, morals, justice, metaphysics, etc.

>"The imitator or maker of the image knows nothing of true existence; he knows appearance only …. The imitative art is an inferior who marries an inferior and has inferior offspring."
- Plato, The Republic

>“the greatest thing by far is to have a command of metaphor. This alone cannot be imparted by another; it is the mark of genius, for to make good metaphors implies an eye for resemblances.”
― Aristotle, Poetics

Philosophy grew out of religion and stayed tied to its hip until around the early 20st century.

Do I unironically need to start with the Greeks, more specifically the Poetics, to understand any amount of philosophy and literature?

I tried to read an introductory book about Nietzsche and its whole first 50 pages was about his obsession and critique of Wagner's music and about form and the will of the world, and more about tragedy and form.

Similarly, in the introduction to Notes, there is a section about Dosto's beef with Chernyshevsky and how form and content can / cannot be separated.

Are the Greeks literally the basis of all philosophy and art?

Reminder that you're not a true intellectual until you have read the complete works of both Aristotle and Plato, the founding fathers of all intellectual activities.

They together should be around 5000 pages, so get started.

I don't quite get this: it appears that Aristotle was more influential in the creation of the western world, yet Plato is usually considered as generally the more influential one. What gives?

How serious is the meme, "start with the greeks"? I've had to read Republic and The Politics for my political philosophy course, does it matter if I've not read the mythology extensively? Are those two books good enough for my starting point into Western Philosophy?
