Can religious texts serve as software to program the population?

Software is a series of instructions given to an irrational machine, in that sense, very close in principle to the subconscious (If we follow Lacan's ideas, much more familiar than one might think).

Religious literary works are literature, stories, but they are not "art", but a special kind of discourse. They do not suspend disbelief as in normal work, they are messages that declare the reader to be of divine origin, or that come from beyond everyday and material reality, and that gives them special properties in the brain and consciousness, capable of shaping how a human mind perceives its immediate world.

Is it possible that religion is just a cerebral framework for determining human behavior? Can the terrain these stories have gained be resorted to and replace them with our own stories?

a photo by author of "7 years in Tibet" - although the book itself (and the movie too) aren't about that aesthetic.
