I bought it when I was 19 because I was smoking pot every day, taking LSD or mushrooms every weekend, listening to the Grateful Dead, and thought it was the 60s. I only read about 80 pages then stopped. I picked it back up a few years later when I had stopped the drugs and replaced it with reading as my main hobby.

I really enjoyed it, the messed up writing style add to the experience. It's a very interesting piece of journalism. It's a lot like Thompson in the sense that it seems highly exaggerated and stylized but that makes if feel like you're reading a novel instead of nonfiction. The way it is written is supposed to let you experience the insane acid-soaked culture of Kesey and his merry band of pranksters. As someone who took a lot of LSD and did a lot of stupid shit while I was on it I got what he was going for. It was a great way for me to reminisce about my drugged out and carefree late teenage years without taking drugs again.
