Hi, /lit/. I'm starting a book reading/research project in my English class, and we've been told to select a book that is held as controversial, and has been banned or censored in the past. What are some books I can use to really fuck with my class? Most of them are the usual Southern U.S. "herp derp, Christianity Baptism yay", so anything criticizing religion would be fun, though I'm good with whatever. But, any other ideas?

If a library burns in the ghetto and nobody's around to put it out, do litfags get pissed?

In the U.S., all judgements are intensely local - which means any book can get judged obscene at any time in any library or bookstore.

When "In the Spirit of Crazy Horse" by Peter Mathiesson was published, South Dakota governor Janklow ordered the SD State Police to seize all copies in every bookstore and library. He said that the book libeled him. A couple of booksellers went to jail.

It isn't just local officials. When the hankie heads got all upset about Salman Rushdie, just the idea alone of crazed Arabs was enough to get B. Dalton, Walden, Crown and Barnes & Noble to pull "The Satanic Verses" from their shelves.

Since this is /lit/, research the history of the book Ulysses in the U.S. Also Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer.

Check out the annual ALA banned books list.

Nat Hentoff.

Conservatives ban (and burn) books. Liberals fight these bans and burnings.

Now, maybe you want to substitute some Bizarro World revisionist definition of "conservative" for the distasteful facts, but you aren't fooling anyone.
