It engages you similar to a narrative and produces this feeling of autonomy/ownership, as if you found the answer to something you've been searching for. Makes one feel like they're re-writing their life even while they're passively reading a book. Truth is, that's all bullshit, these books don't help you progress with anything because there's no consistent concrete information

You'd be better off picking up textbooks or learning about a real subject, be it arts or science, mathematics, whatever. Self-help books just provide temporary ego-inflation about nonsense

Also, don't try to speedread if it ruins your reading comprehension. Aim for grasping new concepts and applying logic to question your current beliefs. Always keep questioning your positions on your belief systems too. Good reading comprehension skills and critical thinking is way more valuable than reading-and-forgetting. Ideally you want to form your own beliefs. Don't regurgitate from others - always try to explain why you believe something. You can go a lot farther with all of this than you'd think

Hey disregard the retards above me. A cliché is a dead metaphor or a platitude. Alternatively, they can come as tautological phrases
Sometimes idioms might appear as clichés, but they're not; they're culturally engrained just to fill out the gaps in language (also avoids creating brand new figures of speech every fucking sentence)

A theme is an archetypal storyline, psychologically they run deep (found in myth/fairytale) or within hierarchies as general archetypal human experiences. If you want a look at general themes check out The Seven Basic Plots.
For motif, that's usually expressed symbolically either thru metaphorical/figurative language, or thru animistic imagery. Examples of the latter are found in folklore, you could also check out Jung if you're interested in that (symbolic expressions, thru waking life or dreams)

I think you could benefit from reading about internal vs. external locus of control and theories of self-efficacy. You seem to blame your problems on the internet. To me, it sounds like it's your problem, but you're externalizing it into an internet meme (ironic) instead of taking responsibility for yourself

Be careful with memes like this anon. You have become what you were trying to avoid

Well, let me change what I said - there's a danger of escapism. Getting too wrapped up or involved in the storyline by identifying with one of the archetypal characters. Our brains are hardwired to identify a Hero's Journey storyline, our minds are hardwired to perceive them symbolically as well.

But you can find these themes all across fiction, mythology, movies, television. Symbolic characters and storylines provides meaning to our lives. Identification, or belief that you ARE one of those archetypes (like believing you are similar to God, Jesus, one of the other archetypal heros) is dangerous. That's where crazy begins.

Self-discipline is just the result of clarity and single-mindedness, so I guess you could read a good book on meditation, along with actually meditating. Reading the book is important because meditation itself is non-action, so it doesn't in and of itself answer questions, it merely creates space for the resolution(which is an action).

It's about the state of mind when you know what goal you are striving for, and when you drop every other distraction. It is a state of inner freedom because you are free from your usual compulsions, you feel like you have no inner obligation but what You decide to do, and you go ahead and do it, even through a shitstorm. You could see it as a state of no compulsion, and since pain is a compulsive force then pain loses its oomph.

This is why meditation, when done right, leads to a stoic and almost ascetic lifestyle. All these famous discipline celebrities know how to reach deep states of relaxation and practice on a regular basis. As for Which books to read, give me some time to compile a reasonable list.
