How does this Catcher In The Rye reflect the time period in which it was written?

So why is this book taught in schools? Not saying its a bad book, but I can't quite see why they wanted me to read it. I suppose it could be because its about Holden learning to grow up but there are lots of books that do that. It has symbolism but we teach symbolism through Lord of the Flies.

alright, there are probably many threads about this book that show up because it's an American Classic, but i want to discuss it, i really do.(not funny pun)

fuck this book. i read it back in highschool and i thought it was good for a book assigned in school, mostly because it was crude and inappropriate. I decided to start reading it again this week in my spare time and i am about halfway through.

This book is given too much credit; honestly the Author's "style" doesnt seem like a style at all, it just seems like he wrote, without even taking proper literature conventions into account.

Also, i've begun to actually HATE the main character. I know it is a common thought that he's just an ungrateful hypocrite, but he really is! he's just a fucking vagina about everything and just complains all the god damn time. if he doesnt like the situation he is in or in uncomfortable, he just leaves the area and tells the reader "yeah that place was gay anyways." seriously i dont know if i've ever met a bigger bitch in my life than Holden.

i think it might be chapter 11 that i'm thinking of when i remember him going on and on about Jane and how she was crying in the rain and that he kissed her everywhere but her lips. he goes on for atleast 4 fucking pages and then ends with, "i dont really like to talk about it honestly."

discuss this shitty excuse for a book.

Now that I have your attention.

I read this a long time ago, and I'm shallow and can't get past one little thing, if it can be explained, I'll read it again.

Alright Anon,
Holden keeps wondering "Where do the ducks go?"
Yes?

He goes as far as to inquire of people where the ducks have gone,
Yes?

How does neither he, nor anyone else he asks, know that ducks migrate south for the winter, or will tell him as such?

It's symbolic? What does it mean?

“Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules.”
“Yes, sir. I know it is. I know it.”
Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it’s a game, all right—I’ll admit that. But if you get on the other side, where there aren’t any hot-shots, then what’s a game about it? Nothing. No game.

. . . I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff—I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all.
