Well them and many others. The Homeric stories were originally orally given for instance. The proto-germanics and celts didnt even bother to write their oral traditions down. I'm sure theres even some modern day tribes in the Amazon rainforest that don't need books because their oral traditions are still strong.

I don't think anything in civilization is necessarily needed to healthily develop, that just wouldn't make any sense since our species didn't originally have civilization. However stories seem to be something we need in order to orient ourselves and give us some grounding to come up with our own thoughts off of. Books fill this role for us but oral traditions probably fulfill this just as well if not better, depending on the person. Of course we need writing in modern civilization so having an oral tradition is pretty much impossible to establish, it probably takes eons for a tribal culture to develop a decent one in the first place.

Would it be weird if I as an anglo American started a temple to the Hellenic gods where I read passages of my favorite myths every Monday morning so I don’t have to come in for work or else they’d be overstepping my religious liberties? Do you think it could work? If I get fired do you think I could sue for discrimination?
