Why do some fringe groups claim that Walt Whitman was gay?

Is it because they don't know how to interpret his work or because they have liberal agendas?

I mean he blatantly said at one point that shaving is for gays. "“Washes and razors for foofoos," scoffed Walt Whitman.

the working man returns home to his wife
supple with the red of the apple dusk
no, fuck off

Is there any prominent writer, philosopher, or thinker with which you identify on a very personal level? In other words, have they somehow influenced the way you live your life on a daily basis? I know it's possible to entertain the ideas of a crazy ass motherfucker who wrote books a couple hundred years ago, but there's a difference between that and actual emotional-personal identification.

Pic most definitely related.

So /lit/, are you all as pretentious in real life as you are here?

>Are you attending/have you attended university? If so, where?
>What do you want to do with your life?
>What are you doing with your life right now?
>Favorite author of all time?

Take my goddamn survey.

It's challenge time /lit/
Below is a link of the BBC's top 100 books of all time. They've said that they expect the average person to only have read about 6 of em. How many have you gotten through?
I've done 35, but I'm hoping to get to more.

Walt Whitman always related.

What does /lit/ think of Walt Whitman?
To me, he's pretty much a mindgasm and a half. Complete embodiment of the (sadly unattainable) American ideal, using beautiful, innovative language. Even if you hate him, he doesn't give a fuck.
