Basically this. Not to mention, the thought ‘experiment’ just relies on Materialism to be correct, along with some weird ass implications of ontological identity. You could argue that the no-cloning theorem in Quantum Mechanics doesn’t allow for Consciousness to be perfectly replicated even in a Materialist worldview, but these people wouldn’t understand it any other way.

If I had cloned you while you were still alive and tortured the clone, you wouldn’t feel anything. In the same way, you wouldn’t ‘feel’ anything of an AI simulated you. There’s also no reason an AI would torture you just because you didn’t contribute to it’s existence.

I don’t really think true sentient AI can actually come into being either. Would be cool if it did, though. If we could run an AI on a quantum computer we might be able to do a ton of experiments that we wouldn’t be able to do otherwise; unfortunately, I don’t think that is even possible. Lol.
