Book 1 of plato's republic:
>Thrasymicus: I think justice is an inconsistent and arbitrary term defined in the immediate self interest of the powerful which everyone else parrots to fit in.
>Socrates: bUt WhAT iF tHe DiCtatOr oRdERS PeOple AgAINST hIs oWn BeNEfit?
>Thrasymicus: I think you’re choosing to interpret me in a deliberately stupid way because all you're good at is making criticisms and not ideas of of your own.
>Socrates: No, I’m not!
Is this meant to feel ironic? The hand wavy nature Socrates presents case analysis so broadly makes me want to chew glass.
For instance:
>Socrates:would you rather hire a skilled person or a morally just person?
>Glaocon: The skilled obviously!
In practice? No. I don't want to do business with anyone who i think is unjust because they're going to fuck me. If a just person is adequately capable of building me a house then i’d take the just one. If they’re not capable of it then they’re not really a house builder and the question giver is arbitrarily inventing unreasonable conditions to make a broad claim that isn’t practically justified in common cases of life. If you can’t trust somebody: you can’t work with them. Plato makes a billion broad assumptions just like this. Even a subtle mistake in a logic proof can lead to arbitrary conclusions.

Is there a metatextual interpretation i’m not getting here?

If you dont read Dante in original, dont bother. If you go and see for yourself the original and the English translation side by side...my God, the English is terrible and nothing alike those balmy verses of Dante.

If Dante were forced to live in this modern hellhole, he would appear on To Catch a Predator and Chris Hansen would read him La vita nova and ask him if he knew how old Beatrice was. Fuck this convoluted Puritan dystopia.
