Is she a good author to try to learn to write well from? I often find that it’s the writers that are good but not brilliant that serve as the best teachers, perhaps they don’t have the talent to reach the heights of the once in a century kind of writer but they avoid the mistakes of bad writers. I haven’t read her but from a friend’s recommendation, Patricia Highsmith seems to ride a line between commercial and literary fiction. Is she a good writer? What do you think of her?

Different anon but I've read everything by Highsmith and I'd definitely recommend Price of Salt, and for that matter also Sarah Waters as another anon said, although I've only read The Fingersmith.
Also if you want something more cutesy, YA like (which is probably closer to actual yuri), try The Miseducation of Cameron Post.

Barring the obvious necessary activities, I want to give up everything In life but reading and writing.

I want to go long stretches of time without internet, abstain from TV, etc.

But how can I develop the willpower for this? Are there any books on the subject?
