Why does /lit/ like this book?

So /lit/, I'm finally reading Gravity's Rainbow, and I am enjoying it even though Im early into it, but some things give me mixed feelings. For example, the way Pynchon describes situations is almost disgusting to me. It's so jagged and uncomfortable, yet I still read it because I thoroughly enjoy what he's saying. Did anybody else feel this way, or am I just an unsophisticated pleb?

Would you say that Pynchon has a consistent narrative universe across his novels?

I doubt anyone else has ever read this, it's very obscure

IJ isn't esoteric. From what I've gathered it's rather famous in the US and making mention of it is popular among the middlebrow because of its length and perceived complexity. But given where you're coming from, and although that book is even more famous, the answer to your question is probably pic related.

Ok /lit/ I've successfully completed the first part "Beyond the Zero" and I have to say this is one of the most fascinating novels I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Does the second part focus more on the sexcapades of Slothrop with PISCES pursuing him through the streets of London or is it more confusing character intros?

I read 'Gravity's Rainbow' and for weeks afterwards I had no interest in anything other than getting erections and building rockets. After finishing this book I encased my friend in a rocket and sent him to the moon

WTF have you gotten me into /lit/? The first portion of the book is beyond magnificent, but I can't tell if Pirate is having hallucinations during the Adenoid part or is there some higher significance to this pre-WWII rendition. Can anyone explain how Blatherard Osmo's monstrous Adenoid can be ripped apart from him like some separate entity?

Is it worth it to re-read this book? I've gone back through some sections of the book (like I re-read pretty much the entire 'Counterforce' section of the book and found that I enjoyed it a lot more on a re-read than I did originally), but I'm not sure if it'd be worth it to re-read the entire thing.

Are there any books, short stories, or literary journals I should dive into before tackling this monster?

WTF was going on in the ending? Why is Gottfried in the rocket? Why did the whole narrative break down? What exactly happened with the testing on Slothrop when he was a child and what was up with his dick predicting rockets?

I'm having a hard time reading Gravity's Rainbow... What could help understand it?

For example, maybe I'm missing some historical context.

What's to with all the toilet diving and shit eating and other unpleasantries?
I thought this was supposed to be a "Great American Novel", not some treatise on scatological interests during WW2
