checked and I literally could not imagine what it would be like not to attend the illustrious, globally renowned, historically insurpassable University of Oxford. I mean, it would be so very unbearable to attend some inferior institutions where "lad culture" (and indeed "board culture") takes precedence over a life of academic curiosity and career ambition. Furthermore, it has to be said that anybody with an ounce of genetic potential should be studying at the University of Oxford. If they aren't, they should be considered an embarrassment to their family, their nation, their race and indeed themselves. I mean it would hurt me physically not to atten such an illustrious a university if I had even the slightest chance of doing so. The range of amazing colleges, the wise, witty professors, the ancient traditions and peculiar formalities which truly make an education at the University of Oxford such a Hogwarts-esque experience, while, to stay true to this particular image an education at literally any other university - barring, perhaps, Cambridge - is no more romantic or exciting than some third-rate Muggle institution such as the one Harry would have attended had he not learned of his magical abilities. Lets look at the facts: over 50% of University of Oxford undergraduates come from privately educated, Elite backgrounds; 80% of students have parents whose job is regarded as being among the most challenging and well-paid occupations in the countr, and the statistics relating to the kind of careers former University of Oxford students successfully pursue are known to all. And of those students, those English Roses and dashing young Gentlemen, how many indeed go on to marry and mate with one another, rather than risk a life of financial destitution and social ostracization by allowing themselves to be carried away by some fleeting infaturation with a member of the working class. The question is of course rhetorical, as the vast majority of University of Oxford students do coincidentally end of marrying fellow members of the Elite, genetically distinct upper class.

I have an English degree, and out of all of the people I graduated with, I'm probably doing the best financially. A lot of them have been out of work for years, or just flit around from min wage gig to min wage gig.

Some went to grad school to put off the anxiety of having no future prospects. Under no circumstances should anyone go to grad school for English.

My work is not related to my degree. I work at a very popular and well-liked warehouse club. My job is easy and stress-free and a degree offers no benefits aside from having little chats with old professors when they get their groceries there. The pay and benefits here are better than most white collar jobs in this area, so I'm stuck, but I'm not resentful about where I am: a job that pays this well and doesn't test my nerves is a blessing in the changing fortunes of time.

Don't bother with an English degree. I enjoyed reading and writing papers about books all the time, but that knowledge doesn't get you anywhere in this market. Make connections, however tenuous, and use those to network - that's what gets you work, unfortunately.

I like this a lot. It reminds me of something I might write while having a smoke on the balcony and reflecting on my day, but with slightly less schizoid rambling. I especially liked the bit about turning on the phone and telling someone you can't call that you don't like the way light works, I dunno, it just reminds me of how I feel sometimes thinking about the people I've left behind. thank u for the relatable feels anon

I am writing a Victorian fictional story about 4 mercenaries that are assigned a job in a foreign city full of cutthroats, bravos and intrigue. They all have their separate motives and motivations and they realise the importance of their mission as a conspiracy slowly unravels before them.

My life together with her would flash before my eyes. I'd see us get married and have kids. Eventually she would stop wearing the nose ring except when I playfully prodded and teased her about it then she would put it back on just for me. I'd tell the kids she was wearing it when we first met and she'd blush and we'd all have a laugh.
Then after the unusually long silence while I was imagining all this I'd snap back to reality and awkwardly mutter something unintelligible. She'd stand there for a brief moment unsure of what to do next and then shuffle off. I'd quickly leave the building and wonder what exactly she must have been thinking. The thought would haunt me for the rest of my life. I would never go back.
