1) in the ancient times - philosophy combined all domains. not just "philosophy" philosophy like metaphysics and ethics, but also the scientific domains.

2) the current post-Enlightment-scientific mindset really only leaves room for analytic philosophy, which almost feels like a "bolt-on" to Science, which basically took over and won the academic world

3) capitalism, money, etc. there is no money in philosophy, both in a "university student engagement" sense, and a career sense (I disagree with point (2), but many think it's a true statement.)

3b) there are too many philosophy students and not enough philosophy jobs, which is causing prospective students to either a) leave the field or b) not join the field in the first place.

4) philosophy is no longer engaged with the common world like it might have been during ancient times. Academic philosophers really only talk to each other and very occasionally write a book for the layman, which even then, maybe people don't read.

I like Rorty a lot and he's my last favorite philosopher
