They'd always compared him to Marcel Johnson. Not because he was like Marcel Johnson, but because Johnson was basically a Jeopardy answer at this point. If someone plays with a bow and arrow, they're Robin Hood, or if they're a good detective they're Sherlock Holmes. For FBI profilers, it's Marcel Johnson as the benchmark.

Actually, he'd always disagreed with Marcel Johnson, which made him very displeased to be at this retirement supper. Jerkoff wasn't even really retiring, it was a soft retirement if anything. The second a case even had a whiff of being a challenge, the orders would come down to call Marcel Johnson out of retirement for a consult.

Johnson was just getting to the part of his retirement speech where he mentions the funny story about how all the college students in the seventies thought he was a spy and that's why no one would speak to him. His zinger line at the end is about how entitled those college kids are to think they warranted federal surveillance.

I honestly thought that ever since I told him he was right, it was ridiculous for the college students to think they were important enough to warrant a dedicated FBI mole in their classroom, and that they just refused to speak to him because he was an asshole, he'd stop telling that fucking story. I guess anyone's profile can be wrong.

Anyway, I knew Marcel wasn't any happier to be handing over the department to me than I was to be here at the supper. He pretends like having someone around who fundamentally disagrees with all your values is a good thing, to keep people from getting caught in an echo chamber, but if the choice were his, he'd never make me his successor. Diverse opinions are only good to have around if you can overrule them.

Marcel Johnson spent his career fighting to get Judges and Prosecutors to accept profiles as evidence on their own merit. I believe profiling is a way to find evidence, not evidence on it's own. If your profile tells you to look for a man with a stutter, say, that's great. You can narrow your suspect list to people with a stutter, maybe watch your stutterer for a few days, see if he murders anyone. You shouldn't arrest people because they have a stutter though. That's the fundamental divide between me and Johnson. My whole outlook is diametrically opposed to his whole legacy. You are allowed to arrest people based on an FBI agent's opinion about the type of person who committed the crime, because of Marcel Johnson.

Johnson was getting to the part of his speech, well, it didn't matter, it was just a retread of stories he's told a thousand times before, when an on-duty agent entered the hall. Unofficially, I'd already taken over. He stopped and asked a hostess what my name was, and then beelined for me.

"ASAC Browning, there's been an incident."

I'm more advanced mentally than you.

That's why I have faith in the higher power.

yes, well, it is completely unheard of for pornstars to get plastic surgery...however, have you ever considered that people simply look a bit different when they are riding the bus instead of on a studio set?

sorry, I don't need books to tell me what to think. In fact, anyone who does isn't really thinking, they're just being brainwashed.
