when you have control of what people are exposed to, and when you know they will routinely be exposed to it, you can create a "matrix" for everyone. a matrix of information, a matrix of entertainment. and these matrixes are controlled by AIs (symbol: absolute fucking superintelligences) that are engineered to give you whatever will keep your attention for the longest amount of time.
now could you imagine the effects of routinely exposure to something that sucks your attention with ridiculous efficacy, on the grand majority of first world countries' populations?

So, I checked out the wiki, went over some of the lists.
For example, Catch-22, from the quick summary is just a book about a fictional military division, to me that doesn't seem very interesting, so what is the merit in reading it?
This is not to call out this book in particular, but rather, I'd like to know what you posters of /lit/ would recommend a book, other than "it's a classic"
A list kind of the like the following (although I have no clue to how good it is) at least gives a slight reason to why to read the books, and in the suggested order.

Any recommendations on the best translations of the Iliad, Odyssey, and Histories? Are the ones in the chart here ok? I am not learning Ancient Greek.

Basics, but not necessary to read all. Start with Mythology, Homer, Presocratics, then dip into Socrates and from there make your own decisions

Just finished Mythology by Hamilton and I'm wondering if I can go straight to The Histories by Herodotus. I just don't feel it 100% necessary for me to read the playwrights in full when I just want to dive into Plato and Aristotle.
