What do you guys think of Perdido Street Station?

I know the author is a lefty who hates Tolkien with passion, but if we separate the artist from the art, to the ones who read it, how good would you rate it? It has an interesting premise and I see a lot of people saying it really good, besides it won a lot of prizes.
