I'm writing an essay on The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky. I'm planning to write my essay on the philosophy of the fear of death.

Is there any advice you guys can give me for tomorrow? Any specific information, etc..

I'm going to be reading this soon. Looking forward to it.

After evaluating his work as a whole, I have come to the conclusion that this is Dostoevsky's greatest work. Can anyone prove me wrong?

Started reading it, loved the first part, then the second part starts, and, its okay, and now im just reading it to finish it, not because im loving it, does it get better in the second half?

Dostoevsky completely shook my perception of virtue in each and every one of his books, but The Idiot must have struck me hardest, as is evident by my tripcode.
The confession of sins as a parlor game, Rogozhin's madness, and the ending sequence had me nearly in tears.

This is Dostoevsky's true magnum opus. More focused than The Brothers Karamazov, more intense than Crime and Punishment, and more poetic than the rest of his work combined.

When does it get good?

hey /lit/, what was the point of this? I've enjoyed individual bits, but as opposed to the brothers Karamazov there didn't seem to be much of an overarching plot other than some scatterbrained soap opera relationshit executed by tons of shallow, underexplored characters; are there some themes that escaped me, or some subtlety that i didn't catch?

Just finished this bad boy.

What a fantastic ending, that is, the ending of the main narrative, not the wrap up tacked on conclusion.

Dem feels. It certainly did not turn out how I thought it would. Poor Myshkin.

I was recommended a novel last night, though I'm struggling to remember the details. Author's name was Ashbery (or similar), and my flatmate seems convinced that the title was along the lines of 'Calypso'.

Outside the standard 'I read this book five and it was red - what is it?' request, name me some contemporary philosophical novelists. Bonus points if their surname starts with 'A'.

Do you guys read multiple books at the same time or just one at the time? Is one better than the other?

I'm up to the middle of The Idiot and, though I like it, I want to read something else for a short while. It's an exhausting read.

Why was Natasya Filippovna afraid of Myshkin? Was she really mad?
