Unironically, the best scene was the one were Levin spends the day cutting hay with the peasants. Could not stand Anna and Vronsky by the end of the book.

In my personal experience flirting with /pol/shit I found that dehumanisation is the foundation upon which everything else rests. Once I began thinking about everyone as a human, I stopped being able to take that stuff seriously. Reading Tolstoy is what brought about this change within me. Read War and Peace, or Anna Karenina. I'd say read Tolstoy in general but these are his most well known works so why not start there. The compassion, understanding, and wisdom with which he approaches humanity has affected me deeply. I don't think I really understood compassion and Christian Love before reading him, and then something just clicked in my mind while reading these books and it never went away.

Your opinion is nothing until you've read Levin's grass mowing chapter.

I'm midway through part three (about 350 pages through a 980ish page edition) and I'm wondering if I should continue if it isn't doing much for me. I feel weird about dropping it, because it's one of the most readable books I've ever read if that makes sense. It just seems to flow extremely well, and it hasn't seemed to have any filler at all so far. I know that sounds positive, but I find it so dull. There's been a few memorable moments, but overall I couldn't care less about what happens to any of the characters, which is making the dramatic interior monologues have pretty much no impact on me. And the (translated) writing does flow well, but it feels like it has no real character to it. It reminds me of Flaubert's writing in some ways but it feels much more pedestrian and forgettable. Does it noticeably improve or is Tolstoy probably just not for me? I did love The Death of Ivan Ilyich so I figured this would be great as well.

What's the best translation of this? The only other Tolstoy I've read was the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation of The Death of Ivan Ilyich. I liked their translation of that a lot (at least the general flow and word choice), but I've heard mixed things about their version of Anna Karenina for some reason.

Also since I'll get around to it eventually as well, what's the best War and Peace translation?

I mostly read obscure SciFi books.
"Two Faces of Tomorrow" was one of the best, "A Fire Upon the Deep" was also good.
My favourite book that anyone might actually know is pic related.

I'm going to start this book. It will be the first book I've read in nine years.

Is there a recommended translation? I will read it in English. Also, anyone who has read it, does it rank among one of your favorite books?

Would I enjoy this over War and Peace? Tolstoy seems to think it was better. Want an opinion of someone who read both?

What the fuck? Was Tolstoy retarded? The "debates" between Levin and Sergei Ivanovich, where you're clearly supposed to think Levin's right, are insane.

>Hurr Russia doesn't need medicine because I don't believe in doctors
>Hurr Russians don't need education because serfs who can read are lazy
>Hurr I don't need a fair jury because I won't commit a crime

Alright so /lit/ I have a few questions before I go much further into Anna Karenina
1: Do I really need to know much about what Russia was like in the late 1800s to "get" the book?
2: Is the Joel Carmichael translation bad enough to where I should just go buy the actual book and finally
3: How do you pronounce Karenina?

/lit/ I picked up this from the library today (this is not my edition, my edition is the Carmichael translation) and I have no previous experience with Tolstoy. Am I in way over my head or is this a good way to begin Tolstoy's works?

I have nightmares virtually every night nowmore. I wish I never was born.

But most of the time I'm fine and my life is moving forward to great opportunities. I kind of wish I would enjoy myself more so I try to.
