It all makes sense now. The European civilization did not end with Goethe. It ended with Shevchenko.

How do I cope with the fact that I will never be able to achieve the level of fluency in any language (beside my own) that would enable me to compete with writers who were born into that language? My language and my country are not relevant on the global scale and I will never be satisfied with recognition of my compatriots.
