So many seething heterosexuals in this thread. While it is true that there’s no explicit textual evidence that Achilles and Patroclus had any kind of homosexual relationship, the later Greeks tended almost universally to interpret them as a pederastic couple and portrayed them as such in their own works. Whether this is the product of a particular Greek insight into the subtext of their national epic, or simply the result of changing cultural mores, is nearly impossible to tell. Regardless, we can be certain that it is not mere ignorance or a perverse desire to infer homosexuality’s presence in every sacred artefact of high culture that is responsible. And before any of you philistines act like this is evidence of a “decline” in Grecian morals, it must be said that in Homeric Greece—a more barbarous age, for better or worse—people tended to act much like the “niggers” you so despise (e.g. Achilles), being impulsive and egotistic in the extreme, and considering these virtues.
