I'm going through Euthyphro again and Socrates says that the pious can't be defined as 'what is loved by the gods'. But why not? If someone asks 'but why is it loved by the gods?' isn't it a perfectly fine response to say 'because it is.'
I do understand, however, the contradiction between pious being defined as inherently pious while at the same time being god-loved.

>Theognis of Megara (c. 540 B.C.) is one of the most notable of early elegiac poets. Born probably at the beginning of the sixth century, he lived at a time when his city was torn between violent struggle between nobles and democrats. In that struggle Theognis was on the side of the nobles, who longed for the happy days when Megara was governed by its aristocracy. He felt utter contempt for democracy and the 'new men' it produced.

>One of the main preoccupations of the Theognidea is the political situation within the state that threatened nobility, whose heart was in horses, dogs and boys. Money, they observe, now compels good families to make unworthy matches for sordid gain, whereas in horses, sheep and asses proper breeding is observed! Here again we clearly see the aristocratic conviction that inherited ability is absolute, depending on the blood.

>The second book of the Theognidea is a collection of elegiac poems dealing with the love of boys. This book illustrates a side of Greek life which is difficult for modern people to understand.
