I just read and take notes if necessary. Mostly I mark up the text. The nice thing about physical books is their mnemonic properties. Since they're three-dimensional objects it's easier to know where a page was, if it was on the left or right, early, middle, end of the book. Then the layout of the text and the additional markings really help find things again easily. And the books themselves, being on a bookshelf, are easy to find in three-dimensional space. Anyway that's all a matter of using the layout of books in space to your advantage with memory retention and callback. I also write notes on the side sometimes and that way I can synthesize ideas better. Get in the habit of writing essays on what you read, for your own private use. Of course I'm talking about philosophy and not fiction because if I'm reading fiction I rarely need to take notes or mark up the text.
