It's different from his other works. Very interesting and engaging.

Why are all Dostoevsky characters such gigantic simps?

This is basically just a well-written romantic drama. This is something a Karen would read.

30% through and enjoying it a fair bit. It's a departure from his other work; the Quixotic structure of mini-stories is pretty endearing and Myshkin is a strangely compelling character. Not sure why he's fallen in love so quickly but eh. Can we get a comfy discussion going?

Don’t know if this is exactly what you’re looking for, but this book is also about idiots. Hope it helps!

"Hate" might be a little too strong, but the general consensus seems to be that their translations are a bit subpar compared to others such as McDuff, personally I prefer McDuff's translations of The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment to P&V's but I wouldn't call P&V's awful or unreadable just not quite as good.

It really wasn't that good, was it? Not even nearly as good as Crime and Punishment or Brothers Karamazov.

or maybe I was The Idiot all along

just finished this book... probably the best thing i've ever read. absolutely heart-breaking and the ending is horrifying, rogozhin monosyllabic utterances to the prince on the way to the house at the end ('let's go.') and the princes heart beating so loudly in the deathly silence of the bedroom as he makes out in the darkness the foot, the fly buzzing.

the necessary explanation. the beginning. the hilarious comedy at times. the sense of paranoia. the revelation as the book goes on that the idiot actually is an idiot.

I wasn't a fan of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky’s translation of The Idiot. David McDuff's translation really gave a greater appreciation for the book.

Do you think Aglaya ever realized what the prince was trying to do?
Was it really possible for the prince to get her to understand him if given only a meeting?

She never found real love after him, did he? The polack was just a settling for something, right?

Is it possible for him to come out of his mental state? Was her death too much?
I can't help but think Aglaya could rise him out of the depths of his mind - perhaps I'm wrong, after all he seems truly broken over the whole mess, as he should be, but is it really so that even Aglaya could not break him from his mental insanity?
