Read this first, so it won't be absolute shit.
Also read Elements of Style by Strunk and White.

What are some great books on writing?

>reading The Art of Fiction by John Gardner
>he shits on genre fiction and reddit-tier taste in the opening pages, and states that literary fiction is the only fiction that deserves to be called art. The Amazon reviews from butt hurt purple-haired tumblrinas and scifi/fantasy pseuds are hilarious
>solid summary of aesthetic theory, the elements of fiction and how they interact, at least for a complete pleb like me with no English Lit degree
>great actionable advice on common errors, technique, and plotting
>good writing exercises that force me to consider things I never would've considered otherwise and I'm a better writer for it
10/10 would recommend, it makes me feel a little less pleb
