In terms of fiction, specifically for Soviet Kazakhstan, pic related is a personal favorite for an introduction. It opened my eyes not only to the culture of the Eurasian Steppe but also how the Soviet Union essentially snubbed the cultures of many of the regions they occupied. I also recommend the memoir by Mukhamet Shayekmetov, The Silent Steppe, where the atrocities and horrors of early Soviet Kazakhstan and the state influenced famine that spread across the country in the early 1930s. Finally, in line with the Silent Steppe, Hunger by Design offers insight to both the Holodomor and the famine that terrorized the Kazakhs.

If you're okay with this vibe but it's set in Soviet Central Asia, The Day Lasts More Than A Thousand Years. It's the best tradition-vs-modernity book of all time.

I remember reading a passage on the creation of a mankurt in our literature classroom a long way back when I was in middle school. Seemed like the book would be a very interesting read.

Has anyone read it? If so, could you comment a bit on your impressions?

In general, Japanese lit excluded, or including the latter? For the latter try any of Akutagawa's works, Forbidden Colors by Mishima, and Convenience Store Woman by Murata.

try pic related, maybe, been a long time since I read that, and my memory is not very clear of it, but russian/central asian lit gets close to it sometimes, there's a lot of similar azeri stuff, but I mostly read that in farsi so not sure how much of that is translated to english
