I've decided to dispense my charity on your poor soul, dear anon. I'm an absolute autist hispanist currently studying in Salamanca, here's a handful that you'll certainly like:

Don Quijote is and isn't the perfect lyrical novel, there are times were Cervantes is a bloody parnassian like the world has never seen before, I've shed tears to some of his sentences, never mind his verse.

> Ruben Dario's prose, particularly Azul (although he is an even greater lyrical poet - in my opinion the greatest in any tongue)

> Gabriel Garcia Marquez of course, not only his big ones but "Del amor y otros demonios"

> Becquer's "Rimas y leyendas" has a wonderful set of romantic stories, call me a phillistine but I preferred his prose to his verse, "Maese Perez" and the one about the ghostly knight's armour seemed particularly good - however there is one about some nymphs that will absolutely satisfy your desire.

> Technically cheating, but I consdier the portuguese to be within the hispanic sphere: The Book of Disquiet or, "El libro del desasosiego" by Pessoa. The portuguese language translates perfectly - and I wish to stress perfectly - into spanish, to the point were I prefer Angel Crespo's Bernardo Soares than Pessoa's very own. This book is a hallmark of humanity's literary prowess and we are very lucky to be able to read it so powerfully in Spanish.

> An anti-lyrical style you might enjoy, due to the lyrical theme contained within, is Unamuno's "San Manuel Bueno, martir" which feels bit like Hemingway's icebergian simplicity, but in a much more natural Castillian plainess. Unamuno escribe en llano castellano.

Alfonso Reyes was considered by Borges the best prose writer in the entire language in any period, Sarmiento's "Barbarie" is an impressively lyrical essay (and a must-read for anyone interest in hispanic studies).

In fact, the real artillery of our language is found in the poetic field: you'd certainly, certainly love Martin Fierro. Don Juan Tenorio (or Tirso de Molina's version, although Zorrilla's feels superior), Canto general (even if Neruda is occasionally insufferable); hell, even the Gatomaquia by Lope de Vega is a masterpiece. Our tongue is one of troubadours and laureates, a tradition that harkens back to Martial and Prudentius. I'm certain you know this, but the real well-spring for lyricism in our Spanish is found, of course, in its poetry. And if you insist on the novelesque, then consider that mixed prosaic poems I've mentioned (as few would consider things like el Cantar del mio cid or Martin Fierro wholly poetic entities).

Fuentes has many crucial works, however I'd call his Terra Nostra and his Espejo Enterrado as vital - they're the finest system of national introspection Mexico has produced. The author's attempt to rescue those three hundred years of colonial history back into the Mexican mainstream is of utmost importance.

Rulfo's small corps. His æsthetic is undoubtedly a triumph of your nation.

As you may have noticed; there is a pattern: you must understand Spanish [language] culture within its confines, and, furthermore, particularly from the Mexican perspective. This is the burden all of us Latin Americans bear, but it is also a blessing.

Therefore you mustn't limit yourself to a handful of novels, but the entire breadth of our culture. Do not merely read, but experience Don Quijote. Analyse Cien Años de Soledad, but do not be trite: read that which interests you. Gradually build, from the stones of your past, your one world. As our ancestors have done.

And so go forth. Read Carpentier, and Dario, and Seneca even. Identify with them. Become who you are.

Furthermore, I'd recommend Vasconcelos' «La Raza Cósmica» and Rodó's «Ariel», a Mexican and Argentinean take (respectively) on their own Spanish quality.
Try to think of the matter holistically: consider our language, our Catholicism (which, historically, has been equivalent to Hispanidad), our scarred history, our past art.
Exampli gratia; how we tend to search for formalism in language, were we try to display peacock-like our silvery tongue. An American, prompted by someone's asking of the hour, would respond: Six.
A Honduran, asked, would more probably say: It is Six on the clock of the afternoon.
We seek a certain grandeur, something very Baroque. And the Baroque itself deserves an analysis: for it isn't opulence, per se, it is, instead, merely the appearance of opulence.
I was born in the upper class of my Latin American nation, I'm as classically criollo as can be (albeit with slight Germany admixture); it does seem to be an implied understanding that minimising years of work is our goal.
My family has long wanted me in the diplomatic service, then to develop my inheritance, then simply rest - maybe go into politics if I wish.
And I like that.
There is, however, an encroachment of Protestantism in the lower classes. Some great thinker once said: Religion is man's entire reaction upon existence; I fear we are forgetting ours.
