I work at a literary magazine, and a story I pulled out the slush pile recently was unbearably bad, and long, and melodramatic, and stupid.

It was about this girl who falls in love with "the dark boy" (he's never named), they have sex, and then the main character leaves town. And really, that's it.

But it took the author over 20 pages to tell this story, because there was five pages of back story all about the main character's mother, years before the main character was born. Then there were a couple pages which made the mother evil, and the main character like a Disney princess longing for more in her life. Then the guy shows up and it's like I'm reading something by Stephenie Meyer.

Anyway, here's some memorably bad excerpts:

Oh ho, someone doesn't know about FNASR.

The only reason I can see anyone getting so upset over my post if if you are one of those never-published "writers" who always asks for their entire manuscript back.

Nobody wants to steal your shitty ideas.

You know how we look back at the Dadaists of the 1920s and go "wow, what a bunch of moronic, talentless artists"? Well, this is the modern equivalent.

A hundred years from now this will be called "The Classical Literature Supernatural Retcon Movement" and people will look back at all this published fan fiction and think "wow, what a bunch of talentless morons."
