This is 100% right. Unironically caring about what your audience thinks is pussy behavior. People don't know what they want until it's there. Not everyone likes the same things. The best you can hope for is just to write about what's important to you and hope people latch onto it.

The idea that audiences have control over the meaning of art as much as the artist is inherently antithetical to the idea of art itself.
