It’s been a couple months since the last read along crashed and burned, and I haven’t seen other /lit/reads since October. Is it time we finally sit down and finish this great book (with proper planning and accounting the different translations and their differing page counts)?

I had something similar happen to me a couple years ago
After solely reading science fiction for years, I finally got back into reading "normal" books and was completely absorved by it, for a few months I read nothing but classic Russian works and I enjoyed every second of it and felt my horizons broaden, it was a really nice change of pace from some of the absolutely heinous stuff I often read (and still often do as a guilty pleasure)
Of course I came back here and I've gotten really deep into some fantasy series and books, but I try to weave some "regular" works between reads

Would War and Peace have been as successful had been published under the original title, "War, What is it Good For?"

Is this a good read given the current events? Also War and Peace thread.

Am I just a brainlet or did anyone else have to take notes while reading this?
I find it very hard to keep track of who's related to who and who's doing what in my head

A colleague invited me over for dinner and I noticed he had War and Peace on his bookshelf. I've read the summary & analysis of that book and so I told him I really enjoyed how the novel showed the contrast between the European & Russian culture. He loved that I had read it and shared his favorite moments of the novel, with me nodding and borrowing commentary from that summary. By the end of the dinner after a couple of drinks he said he'd recommend me for a promotion. All this because I spent half an hour reading a summary, while this idiot probably spent countless hours reading it. Really goes to show you how worthless fiction is.

Anyone here that has read a danish translation of War & Peace? If yes should is there any danish translation worth reading or do i have to get an english one? I would rather read in danish, but english is acceptable.

On Book 3 and this is only intermittently interesting, I don't really feel like I understand the three central characters that well yet. Does it get better?

Why does Tolstoy keep saying Princess Bolkonskaya (Andrei's first wife) has a "mustache"? Women don't have facial hair, and every visual representation I've seen of her character doesn't show any mustache either. Is it referring to something else I don't know?

never identified with a book character more than Andrei except for when I was 7 years old and really identified with harriet the spy
