Are you coming off that eXiled thing about David Foster Wallace? I recall the guy trying to say that Infinite Jest's first scene, which involves a lot of mismatched perception, was a ripoff of Kafka.

I never bought that. Kafka isn't largely about people's statements and actions being misperceived; his work is more about systems (laws, bureaucracies, customs) that are too labyrinthine and contradictory to be grasped. Why? He got this from the Brits, who excelled in satires about hilariously contorted bureaucracies and lands with strange customs. Dickens, Swift, Carroll. He was a big fan of Dickens, and "Kafkaesque" could be said to be when the real world resembles Alice in Wonderland.
