hi i read through the faq and i couldnt really find the answer i was looking for. I was wondering what the best decently priced ebook reader with a backlit screen was, preferably with e-ink. Sorry in advance if it was in the FAQ and i missed it.

Does anyone know any similarities and/or differences between Deconstructive Criticism and New Historical Criticism?

So far I know that in Deconstruction, the meaning is created by the reader and that in New Historicism the literature is simultaneously affecting culture and affected by culture, so the two tie in somewhat.

Pic related, it's one of the novels I'm referencing.

If I really enjoy Vonnegut's work, what other authors should I look into?

Simple question, /lit/

Would you date someone who didn't like your favorite book? Not just didn't care for it, but genuinely thought it was absolute horse shit.

Pic related, its my favorite book.

Sup, /lit/?

I may have just gotten rather lucky on an Amazon browse. Looking for a copy of Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, I stumbled upon a copy with a very short description, "Unknown binding, 1963". Now, that just so happens to be the year Cat's Cradle first came out. Much to my annoyance, there was no photo. With the sale price at £0.05 (Britfag), I saw no reason not to go for it.

Now, would any kind anon happen to know how widely Cat's Cradle would have been published? Was it an instant success, or did Vonnegut really make his name a few years later? I know he got his Anthropology Masters for the book, but was it as big a publishing hit as it was academic?

Thanks, and I'll try and post the results when it comes in the post.

Pic related, it's the hardback first edition.

Books you read when you were a kid which you wish you'd waited to read.

Pic related: I read it when I was 12 and missed the subtext entirely. I enjoyed it purely as a sci-fi read.

So I just finished Cat's Cradle, and read Slaughterhouse-Five a few weeks ago.

I have to say I enjoyed both, but I don't know where I stand on which is better.

SF definitely had a better, more plausible story (probably because a lot of it was based on a true story), but Cat's Cradle's ideas were much better I think. It was funnier, and the commentary on human actions, and religion were more interesting.

Your thoughts?

One thing I never understood

How did an antisocial semi-retarded person like Hoenikker ever get married? It doesn't make sense to me. How did he even have a relationship. Was he normal before and something messed him up?

I was told yesterday to finish this novel cause it would make me shit bricks. I finished it and I didn't "get it". Someone care to explain?

Half way through this shit, does it get better? Does anything happen? Specifically with the ice-nine or the whole end of the world deal? Maybe I just don't get it.
